KATHMANDU—Members of a group of 43 Tibetans have described their terrifying flight to Nepal under deadly fire from ...
KATHMANDU—Members of a group of 43 Tibetans have described their terrifying flight to Nepal under deadly fire from Chinese border guards who took several dozen other Tibetans into custody.
Witnesses said at least one person was killed and at least one wounded by gunfire Sept. 30 near the Himalayan pass at Nangpa La in the Mount Everest region. Others set the death toll higher. Another 36 or 37 Tibetans were detained, witnesses told RFA's Tibetan service.
The group, which originally numbered around 80 Tibetans, began their journey out of Chinese-controlled Tibet on Sept. 30-Oct. 1, according to members of the group—41 asylum-seekers and two Tibetan escorts—who arrived in Kathmandu on Oct. 10.
"When the Chinese fired at us, I was so tense and frightened. It is still difficult for me to explain what happened," one man said in an interview after arriving at the Tibetan Reception Center in Kathmandu.
"It was so tense and confusing that I just thought of staying alive and escaping. I couldn't think of anything else or help the others."
"I think the Chinese fired for about 15 minutes. I felt bullets whizzing past my ears. In fact I felt about five bullets pass by me and luckily they missed me. I was so frightened that I crawled in the snow using my hands and feet. The snow was about knee-deep," he said.
The man, who asked not to be named, said the group initially thought the gunshots were fireworks, because there were many Western visitors who had come to climb the mountains in the area.
"I thought they were playing with fireworks. But then we realized it was gunshots and about 30 to 40 rounds were fired. In the confusion, we split into two groups. Those of us who were in the front managed to escape and the later group of about 30 or more Tibetans could not escape," he said.
Another Tibetan, who hid in the mountains for two nights before crossing into Nepal, said: "I saw a small child...There was another young boy who was shot in the foot and an old man. They were detained in the area until late afternoon and then the Chinese police took them away."
"Those who escaped later saw the body of the nun who was killed. She was Kalsang Namtso, 17 years old from Ngachu Dri-ru (in Chinese, Biru Xian) county. They gave a local yak herder 100 yuan and asked him to take body away but we heard that he didn't do it. So we don't know what happened later," the second man said.
A Western climber who witnessed the incident told RFA's Tibetan service that two others in his group had been contacted by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and asked to attend a meeting there.
"They have since left Nepal and gone home" without visiting the Chinese Embassy, the climber said.

International Campaign for Tibet Board Chairman Richard Gere speaks to a crowd in Berlin regarding the Nangpa Pass nun shooting incident.
On September 30, 2006, a Tibetan nun in her mid twenties,Kelsang Namtso, was shot dead by Chinese border patrols and at least one other Tibetan was injured while on their way into exile in Nepal. Tibetans traveling with the nun were unable to bring her body, with evident wounds from several rounds of bullets, with them because they feared arrest before entering Nepalese territory. The incident took place on the glaciated Nangpa Pass at 18,753 ft, just a few kilometres west of Mount Cho Oyu, and was witnessed by a number of international mountaineers at advance base camp, who saw Chinese military personnel kneel down, take aim and open fire on the Tibetans, some of whom were children as young as ten.
The video footage, taken by a Romanian cameraman who was at advance base camp on Mount Cho Oyo at the time, depicts a line of Tibetans walking uphill through the snow on the Nangpa Pass when a shot is heard and one of the figures falls to the ground. The video clearly depicts that the Tibetans had their backs to the soldiers, were unarmed, and offered no resistance. The nun who died, Kelsang Namtso, appears to have been shot in the back.

CHEN: As Tibetans around the world prepare for protests, the Tibetan community in Australia says they have trouble ...
CHEN:
As Tibetans around the world prepare for protests, the Tibetan community in Australia says they have trouble communicating with family back in the homeland. Our Sydney correspondent Sheridan Harvey has more.
STORY:
Since the 1980s Sydney's been home for a large number of ex-political prisioners. They're now preparing for a peaceful protest to show solidarity and condemn the Chinese Communist Party's killing dozens of Tibetans.
For many Sydney Tibetans this event brings back chilling memories from their own past.
[Tenpa Dugdak, Spokesman, Australian Tibetan Community]:
"It has been reported that more than 100 Tibetans are being killed; a lot of Tibetans are being arrested. So they know exactly what the feeling is like for Tibetans. These are the Tibetans who were released because people of the world protested when they were imprisoned, so they know it's making effect."
Dugdak says images released of the clashes in Lhasa do not tell the whole story.
[Tenpa Dugdak, Spokesman, Australian Tibetan Community]:
"These are the photos that are sent by the Chinese government, so we are not seeing photos or videos by the Chinese army shooting Tibetans, killing more than hundreds of Tibetans."
Contacting family and friends is tough, with mobile numbers blocked and landlines tapped.
[Tenpa Dugdak, Spokesman, Australian Tibetan Community]:
"The Chinese police are raiding every single house in Tibet to make sure no one is missing to make sure that they don't have the picture of the protest."
The group is asking the CCP to ensure Tibetans imprisoned get a fair trial or are released.
[Tenpa Dugdak, Spokesman, Australian Tibetan Community]:
"Thank you for your sympathy, but we need action."
[Reporter]:
"While the Tibetan community here in Sydney prepares for their protest on Tuesday, the Australian Government has publicly urged China to act with restraint and allow for peaceful protests in Tibet. Sheridan Harvey, NTD, Sydney."

Kathmandu, October 10 - A group of 41 Tibetan refugees including 2 guides arrived safely at the Tibetan Refugee Transit ...
Kathmandu, October 10 - A group of 41 Tibetan refugees including 2 guides arrived safely at the Tibetan Refugee Transit Center in Kathmandu, Nepal yesterday evening from Katari after escaping shootings by Chinese Border Security soldiers on the morning of 30th September 2006. According to an eye witness of the group, Kelsang Namtso, a 17 years old nun from Driru County of Tibet was shot dead just before the Nangpa La Pass, Kunsang Namgyal, a 20 year old boy from Kandze was hit by bullets on his leg, he could not escape and along with him 30 other Tibetans including 14 minor boys were arrested by Soldiers wearing camouflage dress and fur cap and they would be probably taken to Dringri County Town and detained. There were total 75 Tibetans including two guides who were trying to escape from Tibet via the Nangpa La Pass, Tibet-Nepal border.
After escaping the shooting, the group scrambled across the Nangpa La Pass. A total of 41 Tibetan Refugees and two guides escaped safely into Nepal territory. They walked for 9 days via Solukhumbu District and reached road head at Katari Town in east Nepal, took a morning bus and reached TRTC, Kathmandu at around 6:00 PM yesterday. All the 41 people are young from age 7-30 including children, monks, nuns and adults and seeking education in Tibetan schools or monasteries in India, as they either don't get opportunity to go to school or could not bear religious repression in Tibet. A majority of them are from Driru County of Nagchu Prefecture in Tibet and the rest were from Tengchen County, Nagchu Town, Dranag County, Pasho County, Riwoche County, Sog Dzong County, Gyamda County, Dartsedo Town, Drakyab County and Kandze Town. The Nepali Authorities allowed them to travel safely from Nangpa La border to TRTC in Kathmandu without any major hindrance. The Guides refused to comment anything on the matter citing security reasons.
According to an eye witness, a monk from Gyamda County, "75 of us came together from Lhasa in a truck, drove for two days and reached a place from where we walked for about 20 days, when we reached near the Nangpa La Pass, we started walking early morning, we begged food from mountaineers and were eating when the soldiers arrived, they started shooting and we ran, it was around 8 AM (China time), there were 15 small children aged 8-10, only one escaped and rest were arrested, I just ran to save my life by praying to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, I think the soldiers fired for about 15 minutes, there were five soldiers, three were chasing us and two were holding those who were arrested, the soldiers were shouting, probably warning us but I did not hear them as I was terrified, I just heard gun shots passing my ears, I was so sad that many got arrested, I paid 4500 Yuan for guide, I don't exactly remember how many people were shot as we panicked, first 36 people escaped the gun shooting spree, and the rest came later, maybe they were hiding and came later, the Pass was about two hours and the snow on the Pass was knee deep, the nun was with us and she was shot and a boy from Kandze was shot on leg, we were the first group who were shot and there were people behind us who might be arrested, we don't know because we crossed the Pass and reached Nepali territory, I saw that western mountaineers took pictures, I am sure they would have pictures, there were two men and a woman. Two of us were from Kongpo and I don't know about rest, they were many from Driru County".
According to another eyewitness from Riwoche County, "I saw the nun who was shot, she was shot on back by a single bullet, another boy was shot twice on leg, I was also shot but luckily the bullet only caught my pant. I tried to run but I could not run fast so some of us hide in the snow from 8 am to about 3 pm and then escaped, we were just about half an hour from the border when the incident happened. I saw the nun but I don't know what happened to her body. I was in the middle of the group, most of the people ran as fast as they could, when soldiers came, children could not run and were arrested, there were adults too".
People from Tibet usually escape in winter because it is easier for them to adapt to Indian weather and also probably due to severe weather condition on the Nangpa La Pass that makes it difficult for soldiers to patrol the border area. All these newly arrived Tibetan refugees would go to India soon with the help of UNHCR to seek an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and then proceed to Tibetan schools and monasteries.

KEAN: After mass shooting by Chinese communist police of Tibetan monks protesting last Monday, the Dalai Lama has asked ...
KEAN:
After mass shooting by Chinese communist police of Tibetan monks protesting last Monday, the Dalai Lama has asked for an investigation. A Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spokesman is now proposing that Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, go on trial. The CCP is deflecting any responsibility for the killings and suggests the Dalai Lama was trying to sabotage the Beijing Olympics. Human Rights Watch has spoken out condemning China. Here's the full story.
STORY:
The Dalai Lama has called for an investigation into a Chinese crackdown on the protests and whether it was deliberate "cultural genocide".
Premier Wen Jiabao earlier accused the Dalai Lama of orchestrating the riots and said his followers were trying to sabotage of Beijing's August Olympic Games. Tibet's exiled spiritual leader has denied this charge.
In Japan, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch Kenneth Roth condemned China for linking the Tibetan protest to the Dalai Lama.
[Kenneth Roth, Executive Director, Human Rights Watch]: (English)
"It is too facile to attribute the unrest to some deep dark conspiracy led by the Dalai Lama. A degree of introspection on part of Beijing would be appropriate in understanding why the Tibetan people feel so oppressed by China's restrictive policy system."
Roth also criticized China's violent actions against the Tibetan protesters saying that the Human Rights Watch is "deeply concerned."
Monks first took to the streets of Tibet last Monday. More than five hundred monks defied authorities by staging a rare march in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. The CCP strongly condemned calling it as an illegal activity saying it threatened social stability. About two thousand Chinese security personnel fired tear gas to try to disperse monks protesting in Lhasa.
The Tibetan government-in-exile says it has confirmed a death toll of at least 80 based on tallies of bodies spotted in different locations phoned in by Tibetans.
